Air Kerala: India’s new budget airline set to launch HQ in Kochi
750 hires planned under UAE-based leadership, with 2027 international launch in sight

DUBAI: India’s latest budget airline, Air Kerala, will open the doors to its new corporate head office in Kochi next week, signalling a major leap forward in its operational roadmap.
The airline, spearheaded by Dubai-based businessmen, is preparing for its first domestic flight in June and aims to become a key player in regional aviation, connecting tier-2 and tier-3 cities with metro hubs across India.
The new Kochi office will be formally inaugurated by Minister Shri P. Rajeeve, Minister for Industries, Law, and Coir, Government of Kerala on April 15. It will house more than 200 staff as part of an initial domestic network launch, with plans to recruit over 750 employees in 2025.
The airline’s first fleet will consist of 76-seater ATR72-600 turboprop aircraft, tailored to offer ultra-low cost fares across southern and central India. Air Kerala has already leased five aircraft and is finalising plans to purchase additional units to support future growth.
CEO Hareesh Kutty said the airline’s core commitment is to “affordable and on-time” service, aiming to transform how regional India flies. By 2027, Air Kerala plans to enter the UAE market, followed by routes to Thailand, Vietnam, and Malaysia.
Air Kerala
Air Kerala has secured key operational agreements with Kannur International Airport in Kerala and Mysuru Airport in Karnataka. Kochi will serve as the main base, while Kannur is positioned as the airline’s primary hub for future international services. Operations will begin with short-haul domestic flights within a 90-minute flying radius of Kannur.
Chairman Afi Ahmed, who also leads Smart Travel Group in Sharjah, called the partnerships “a huge step,” noting that the airline is designed to boost regional accessibility and economic connectivity.
The tie-up with Mysuru includes plans for a state-of-the-art aviation academy featuring an ATR-72-600 simulator, aimed at developing world-class aviation talent locally. Supported by MP Yaduveer Wadiyar and the Airports Authority of India, the Mysuru initiative will also drive tourism in the region, known for cultural sites and wellness retreats.
Talent and training
Air Kerala is targeting experienced aviation professionals from the GCC and UAE to lead its commercial and operational departments. Key leadership roles – including CEO, CFO, and pilot management – were filled last year to ensure a smooth path to launch.
With a regional-first vision and a clear strategy, Air Kerala is positioning itself as a game-changer in India’s aviation landscape. The airline is banking on affordable pricing, punctuality, and strategic regional partnerships to redefine domestic air travel.
